Building Campaigns for How Platforms Actually Work
What the algorithm shift means for influencer strategy and measurable impact
Hey There,
Welcome back to another edition of Influencer Impact.
As the 2026 cycle begins, one thing is clear: platforms are changing, and campaign strategy has to evolve with them. In this edition, we break down what the algorithm shifts means for influencer programs, chat with people who are driving change in the space, and introduce our new Election Playbook built from real campaign data.
There’s lots to cover this month so let’s just get into it.
Happy reading,

The Algorithm Has Changed. Our Strategy Has To Change With It.
This year, more political campaigns than ever are activating influencers. The investment is growing. The urgency is growing. But the way audiences discover content is shifting faster than most strategies.
For years, the model was straightforward. Identify the right creator. Audit their full profile. Study their tone, their content history, their audience demographics. Confirm alignment. Then activate.
That approach still matters. But it is no longer enough.
TikTok has built a discovery ecosystem where users see more content from creators they do not follow than from those they do. Instagram and Youtube are moving in the same direction, with algorithms now prioritizing content that sparks interaction, not just content from accounts with large or well-defined followings.
This changes the math.
A creator may index perfectly on audience data. Their followers may align demographically with your target voter. But in a feed driven by algorithmic distribution, follower lists do not equal viewership. Discovery is based on signals like comments, shares, saves, and watch time.
We are also seeing a clear platform shift toward content that feels immediate and human. Instagram’s leadership has signaled a move toward raw content over polished curation, and both TikTok and Instagram now reward authenticity over aesthetic perfection. While campaigns may be used to carefully curated video content, direct face-to-camera moments consistently outperform overly produced creative.
So the question is no longer just, “Who is the exact right voice?”
It is, “What type of content is the algorithm prioritizing, and how do we design for that environment?”
Micro and niche creators with targeted authority often outperform broad-reach accounts because their content drives conversation and community participation. Comments are becoming a primary signal of engagement and sentiment, often outweighing likes as a measure of success. Hashtags have less impact on reach than content that prompts interaction, such as prompts like “let me know what you think in the comments”.
This is where frequency becomes critical.
We know that it takes repeated exposure, often seven to eleven touchpoints, for a message to meaningfully register. In an algorithm-driven environment, that repetition is less about one perfectly matched creator and more about coordinated volume across many credible voices.
Instead of placing all weight on finding the single ideal partner, campaigns should be activating networks of aligned creators who can deliver consistent, culturally relevant content that earns conversation.
Social media is changing rapidly. The platforms reward relevance, immediacy, and interaction. If we continue optimizing only for who looks right on paper, we will miss how content actually travels.
The future of political influencer strategy is not precision through one voice. It is strategic saturation through many.
Introducing: The People First Election Playbook
If the algorithm has changed, campaign strategy has to change with it.
The People First Election Playbook is a creator-first roadmap built for this moment. It outlines how to move beyond traditional influencer selection models and design programs that reflect how content is actually distributed and engaged with today.
Inside, we break down:
How to structure creator networks for reach and repetition
Why authenticity now outperforms polished production
How to optimize for comments, shares, and saves instead of vanity metrics
What frequency looks like in an algorithm-driven environment
This is not just theory. The playbook draws from real campaign data and on-the-ground results to show how creator-led programs drive measurable impact across persuasion, turnout, and awareness efforts.
Download the playbook and start building campaigns designed for how platforms actually work.
New Episode: Influencer Impact
Gabriella Zutrau stopped by the People First office to discuss how she and other digital strategists are calling for a major shift: moving 15% of campaign paid media budgets into organic social, creator engagement, and new media infrastructure. If you believe campaigns need to invest where Americans actually get their news — and build long-term trust instead of relying only on ads — consider adding your name to the letter and listening to the latest episode!
Webinar Recap: Culture Over Clicks
As we approach the 2026 midterms, campaigns must rethink how they engage Latino communities.
In Culture Over Clicks, we brought together creators and advocates to discuss why treating Latino voters as a single bloc leads to messaging that misses the mark. The conversation focused on cultural nuance, language, lived experience, and what meaningful engagement actually requires.
Our speakers shared firsthand insights on immigration, identity, media, and community trust, and how creators are helping campaigns move from surface-level outreach to sustained connection.
